A Christmas Advent Calendar DIY

As a broker and creative, I find joy in bringing new life to something old and turning an ordinary item into a treasure. There isn’t always as much time as I’d like to try my hand at new DIY projects, but as the Real Estate peak season slows, and the holidays near, I do my best to make the time. Crafting or otherwise, we have to make an intentional effort to do the things we love. For me, using the artsy side of my brain not only results in a pretty project, but it truly is self-care. This Christmas, I decided to have a go at making my own Christmas Advent Calendar! The holiday season brings out the inner-child in all of us, so I gave my advent calendar a younger feel, but mixed it with some beautiful vintage finds.

When we see projects on Pinterest or in the stores we regular, it’s easy to think, “Oh, there’s no way I could make that!” But I’m a firm believer we are all more able and creative than we think, and that even if our project doesn’t turn out perfect, the process is most of the fun anyway. As you take a look at my Christmas Advent Calendar, think about the household items you may already have that would be the perfect supplies for your own! I used an old door as the backdrop for my calendar, but you could easily use a chalkboard, window, frame, or even a mirror! Place it in a corner of your home that could use some festive cheer or color. And of course, have a ball with stuffing your daily segments! Don’t worry, it’s not too late! Make yours for the 12 Days of Christmas, or even the week leading up to the big day! Put your unique spin on it, and have fun with the details.

For reference, here is a supplies list of what I used to make mine:

  • Vintage door
  • Twine and staple gun
  • Mini clothespins
  • Mini gift bags from Michael’s
  • Permanent marker for numbering bags
  • Garland for decorating the frame
  • Candy, fruit, granola bars, ornaments, pens, and other goodies for stuffing!

  • Sure, the festive season might look a little different this year but you can still start new traditions and build up the suspense of the big day. Plus so many of us got well into crafting during lockdown early this year so why not put those new skills to use again and have a go at making your own advent calendar. In case you weren’t aware, while here at Real Homes we love a good craft, we do like them to be as simple and straightforward as possible, so all these advent calendar ideas are just that!
